Item description:

An exceptional and important antique French 1930s Art Deco ring crafted in the workshop of one of Cartier's most prominent masters - Henri Picq. The ring possesses a superb modernist design of a stylized eye with smooth and flowing edges. Centering the top of the ring is a whooping high and large cabochon untreated no oil emerald of the highest possible Colombian quality. The green hue and saturation is exemplary for the finest stones that came from the Colombian Muzo mine during this period of time. The emerald measures 8.40x8.30x8.50mm with an estimated weight of about 4.30 carats and has an unprecedented and intense traffic light green color and virtually a VVS1 clarity for a GIA Type III gemstone. There are absolutely no surface and not more than a couple of internal fissures and inclusions that are otherwise common to the majority of fine emeralds and this fact leads to the conclusion that the emerald has not been treated or oiled in any way. Surrounding the emerald centerpiece are 27 old European and transitional round brilliant cut diamonds of various graduated sizes with an estimated combined weight of about 2 carats. All diamonds are set into an oval shaped platinum setting and have a superb G-H white color and average VS1 clarity. The top face of the ring measures about 24mm by 16mm. Gross weight of the ring is 11.9 grams in 18 karat yellow gold and platinum and size is 50 (US size 5.5 / UK size J/K). The rings can be resized but it may eventually affect the maker's mark and French hallmarks that are present at the outer edge of the bottom of the shank. There is a combination of both French hallmarks for 18K gold and platinum as well as a maker's mark of Henri Picq's workshop (partially worn). Absolutely scarce antique jewelry collector piece and one of the rare Cartier Art Deco related emerald rings and jewels. The firm of Henri Picq was among the principal Parisian workshops for exquisitely made jewelry in the early part of the 1900s. It is known that Picq created pieces almost exclusively for Cartier at the turn of the century and remained one of their top suppliers throughout the 1920s and 1930s. Many of Cartier’s greatest examples of Art Deco jewelry were manufactured in Picq’s workshop, including important ‘tutti frutti’ jewels that featured carved rubies, sapphires and emeralds.
